Quick q, i've had localised steroid shots from consultant and general steroid shots from gp in past
got a wham banger in the hip which won't go and consultant advises Depo-Medrone 120 mg, he's not the easiest to get hold of but has said gp can do, to save circular calls and mails to gp's and consultants..
is this a localised shot? can gp do it ?
Thanks appreciate views, N

Hi
Sorry but some of this info is confusing and you need to be VERY careful to know the differences here. do not take answers to this sort of question from anyone who isnt in your consultant lead team- this forum is not for specialist medical advice
An "in the joint injection" is of cortisole (steroid) and sometimes local anesthetic. Sometimes a GP can do these but some dont like doing them as if you get it in the wrong place it hurts and doesnt benefit the patient.
A depo- medrone is an Inter- Muscular injection here. depo- MEDROL (my consultant sometimes calls it a "joint steroid" injection) is in the joints and the consultant is very clear on what one he is giving and for what and where.
The doses for an in the joint injection are- (from http://www.rxlist.com/depo-medrol-drug.htm)
Size of Joint Examples Range of Dosage
Large Knees 20 to 80 mg Ankles Shoulders
Medium Elbows Wrists 10 to 40 mg Metacarpophalangeal
Small Interphalangeal 4 to 10 mg Sternoclavicular Acromioclavicular
You can plainly see from this that the aim is likely to be to give you the all- over jab- the depomedrone- BUT CHECK! The normal dose range for this is between 80 and 120, however I have had more in the past as needed. (http://emc.medicines.org.uk/medicine/3549)
The normally stab you in the bum, thigh or outer hip area where there is a large muscle.
It is an all over steroid that is a general calmer of nasty active disease. You need to rest, bed rest is best for a good 24hrs after the jab to get its full effect, you can feel a bit flushed and hyper after (I do) but try and stick to resting and it should last better.
Good luck

I had one on Friday, 120mg in bum. GP gave it after an authorising fax from rheumy nurse. Seems to be helping. Jan x

I DEFINITELY agree that one must refer to their own rheumy with anything like this.
Hips usually are done by the rheumy..I had to have my hip done via ultra sound in hospital BUT it was well worth it as they are more clear of the aim and it has lasted a long while now. Hips are too large an area plus one cannot define exactly where the fluid is so much better to see a rheumy..

I had a 120 mg into the bum. Wasnt fully informed about i- didnt even know what the doseage was till after. Pretty annoyed as I was scraping by on 5mg steriods a day so what was the point i might as well have been on a higher dose that would help. Point making is good to know more about these before getting them done. For example apparently you can only have a limited amount of these shots. Also I didnt rest and it didnt feel like it worked, some say it doesnt work for everyone. Also if its only one joint they will inject into the joint but if its for more than one joint they will inject into your system. Jenni B is right re medical advice from an expert not the forum.

Like Amanda, I had mine done at the hospital by ultrasound. The hip muscles are very large and the area to be injected needs to be precise for the best possible result. Previous ones done by the GP simply were ineffective, the hospital one was spot on. They could see exactly where the stuff needed to be injected; with the GP it was very hit and miss. I would definitely suggest speaking to the Rheumy about this. As Jenni said there are so many types and doses for different areas of the body it really does need medical advice. Good luck Lyn x
